Crinum x digweedii

Crinum x digweedii (sometimes spelled digweedi) is an interspecific cross, according to Scott Ogden (Garden Bulbs for the South, Taylor Publishing, Dallas TX, 1994). C. x digweedii thus refers to any cross between C. scabrum and C. americanum. The common name for this type of cross is Nassau Lily.
But, Mr. Ogden does agree there is much confusion surrounding the digweedii name. In fact he speculated that C. x digweedii has been called C. fimbriatulum, C. submersum, or even C. erubescens in older catalogs. At times it has been called Crinum 'Royal White.'
Mr. Ogden pointed out in his book that other popular hybrids such as C. 'Stars 'n Stripe' are very similar to the Nassau Lily. 'Stars 'n Stripes' is apparently a named form of a cross between C. scabrum and C. erubescens. Likewise, C. 'Sundance' is a cross between C. scabrum and another American crinum (C. loddigesianum). Though the American parent of these more recent hybrids is not C. americanum, the 2 species (erubescens and loddigesianum) are clearly very closely related to C. americanum.
In this photo the C. scabrum-introduced striping is apparent. Mr. Ogden reports that, generally, C. x digweedii is sterile.
