Crinum amabile

Crinum amabile
Crinum amabile

C. amabile has a confusing and hard-to-sort-out history.  Likely, it has been confused many times with C. augustum and similar plants.  It is treated as a distinct species here but is considered by many to be a hybrid between C. zeylanicum and C. procerum.  In turn, C. procerum is considered by some to be a variant of C. asiaticum.

C. amabile does indeed have similarities with C. asiaticum, including a large size.  However, the pink or red keels on the tepals clearly define it as a different plant.  However, not all photos of C. amabile show it to have striped flowers.

In any event, the plant pictured here is known to Marcelle Sheppard as C. amabile.  It has an enormous flower head (basketball-sized or larger) and the sturdy scapes do not need staking.
