Crinum Emma Jones

‘Emma Jones’ has large and beautiful flowers; the plant itself is stately, and creates a lasting visual effect when in bloom. The tall scapes require staking because the large flowers are abundantly produced. This beautiful hybrid was created by Fred Jones who crossed ‘Cecil Houdyshel’ with ‘Peach Blow’. ‘Emma Jones’ is a large plant with scapes 40-48 inches high, and leaves that can be 3-ft-long. Thus, it can be a striking back of the border plant, but the mound of leaves that fills out in spring can be put up close to a walk too.
‘Emma Jones’ is purple-pink, or pink-magenta, or some color similar. After a day or two the flowers can acquire a lavender tint, especially if not subjected to too much hot sun. Sometimes words just don’t work to describe Crinum flower colors either because they change colors from day 1 to day 2, or because the colors are just too numerous—like the many shades of pink or red lipstick that can be found in any shopping mall.
‘Emma Jones’ is a hardy Crinum. Flowering-sized bulbs reportedly can survive 5 degrees F (-15 C) if provided with good drainage, mulched, and given a sunny location.
