‘Bayou Traveler’
(a cross between C. oliganthum and C. flaccidum)

This cross produced a great plant, sort of like a beefed up C. oliganthum; Marcelle selected a clone and has recently named it 'Bayou Traveler'. The plants are about twice as large as regular C. oliganthum (i.e., 'West Indies Mini'), and they are much more prolific growers. The hybrids offset easily and eagerly spread by rhizomes. 'Bayou Traveler' covered Marcelle's entire, earthen, greenhouse floor in a few years, popping up many feet away from the original planting. The plant is a "traveler" and so it was named.
'Bayou Traveler' is apparently indestructible in USDA Climate Zone 9 as long as the plants have regular water and good light; perhaps it will be hardy to 10 F, but no cold hardiness trials have been conducted. The plant blooms easily but not copiously, but it does produce more flowers per stem than C. oliganthum and it will make seeds. Marcelle is currently growing out offspring of 'Bayou Traveler' x self; perhaps such plants will have yellow flowers.
'Bayou Traveler' flowers are similar in appearance to C. oliganthum but are somewhat larger and are held higher above the ground.
